The Old Beggar is played by Donncha Crowley who has an impressive portfolio of roles appearing in films such as The General (dir. John Boorman),
and Kings. With such stage plays as Stone Mad, Mamó Gé (Mother Goose), Translations, The Field among many others. He is also a fluent Irish speaker.
Donncha plays an Old Beggar who bumps int0 Janey outside her school. And instead of passing her by checks to see if the child is ok. He let's her know that the
Holy Fathers will be closing their doors soon if she's to make the que.
He again meets her in the crowd. But this time he forms part of a mob who muscle their way into the crowd and start a push forward for the bread. It is this push forward
that causes Janey to be gravely hurt in the stampeed that follows.
